Igboho and his wife were arrested at Cadjèhoun Airport in Cotonou on their way to Germany.

Ropo, the wife, was released after the pair were arraigned before a court in the country, but Igboho remains in custody after extradition hearing on the request of the Nigerian government was stalled.

He had fled Nigeria after his Oyo home was raided by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS). Two persons were killed by the DSS in the raid while 12 others were arrested and whisked to Abuja.

His lawyers said they delayed application for his bail pending the outcome of the asylum request, noting that they are desperate to ensure that he is not sent back to Nigeria.

Olasupo Ojo, one of the lawyers, said though there had not been an official statement from Benin Republic government on the asylum request, there is hope that a position will be made known this week.

He told the Punch that, “no official position on the asylum request but we are expecting feedback this week”.
